As I crossed the threshold, through the big iron gates, my body tingled as I felt myself transform.
“Welcome to Orientation Week at Barnard College.”
I took a breath, wondering if I could do this. I still felt like a high school student, not yet believing I was ready for the journey ahead yet curious about what the future holds.
What I knew for certain was, I would never be the same after stepping onto the magical campus filled with expectations, opportunities, and possibilities.
Touring the dorm and the dining hall, I started to envision myself living there - a college student with the ability to move through her day on her terms, based on her own schedule. True freedom for the first time in my life. It felt pretty damn good.
From meeting my roommate to connecting with my RA to conversing with sophomores, juniors, and seniors who were part of the orientation team, I felt the embrace from sisters. That day I met several young women who would be my soul sisters for the next 4 years of my life.
I was anxious to see the classrooms in which I would face my biggest challenges. I imagined I was going to be stretched, asked to open my mind and formulate my beliefs in ways that I may not have considered before. It was overwhelming and immediately brought up fears of not being enough.
But stepping into such hallowed space and imagining all of the women who came before me, I felt confident that I could handle anything that came my way. I had their energy to inspire me and thousands of sisters to support me through the hard times ahead.
Passing the Alumnae Association of Barnard College Hall, I listened with awe as the tour guide listed off the graduates of Barnard and how they impacted the world. I was hooked. I went from envisioning what it looked like to be a college student to stepping into the role of future alumni.
I was asked to think bigger, bolder, and beyond the life of a student to how I was going to be of service to the world.
I left home that morning wondering what it would be like to enter university and I finished the day not only as a student but a changemaker.
Sidenote: Barnard was the first college in New York City where women could receive the same liberal arts education available to men. So yes, my desire for sisterhood was real even then!
The Power of Orientation
During my freshman orientation, I went from seeing myself as a high school student to a Barnard graduate, ready to take on the world. I could feel it in my bones; the possibilities for a future I never knew possible.
Orientation allows you to be transported into the world that you have been imagining and somewhere along the way you realize you have become what you dreamt of.
Orientation is a compass that not only guides you but invites you to get in alignment. It is sacred embodiment crystalized with a glimmer of hope, wisdom, courage, and power.
What if any new experience or offering had an orientation helping you to situate yourself?
Welcome to Sacred Business Mastermind Orientation.
