Samhain Ritual

Sisters, I absolutely love this Samhain Ritual so I am posting it again. May you connect with ancestors and spiritual council with honor, openness, and love.

Samhain

October 31st - November 1st

Samhain honors the ending of the longer lighter days as we enter the darkness of winter. We acknowledge death knowing soon after there is creation of life. Mother Earth provided us with food and we give thanks to our harvest as the land goes into slumber.

It is also seen to some as the New Year. The veil between the world of the living and the dead are at it’s thinnest. During this time the world of the ancestors are close to us and I can feel those that have gone before me sitting in community with me. They are sitting in council with me and I have the ability to hear their guidance a bit more clearly. I bow in deep gratitude for their wisdom and their love.

In Korean culture there is a day similar to this but it is celebrated on the 15th of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. This three day harvest festival has always been acknowledged in the No family. When I was a toddler I recalled there always being an altar created for the festivities. Food and fruit were spread out in individual bowls. A picture of my grandparents was placed in the center and I remember my father pouring whiskey into shot glasses for the spirits. This was the day in which we honored not only those that have died in the immediate family but a day to respect our ancestors and honor our lineage.

When I lived in Guatemala, Dia de los Muertos was an important day. Marigold petals were casted everywhere that day. I would travel to the Sacatepéquez Kite Festival to see the giant kites elaborately assembled at the cemetery. These barriletes gigantes, giant kites, were a tapestry of colors with intricate designs. The kites would not be flown until the sun began to set. They were made from all natural materials and had messages to the spirits hand-written on cloth. Placing one hand on the string while the massive kites eagerly flew towards Father Sky made me feel closer to the gods, goddesses and the spirits around me.

These rituals and festivities honored and celebrated the life of those who were no longer with us. They signified that our spirit lives on and our soul remembers, even when the physical body does not.

In honor of my ancestors, my past lives, my guides, and my spiritual council, I take this time to bare witness to their power and their impact on this world.

Cast a Circle

I clear my space and the temple that is my body

I call on my spirit guides

I call on the goddess -

Hecate, Psyche, Inanna, Persephone, Lilith, Rhiannon

to clear the negativity that is sharing space with me

Let the darkness be removed

Allowing the light to shine brightly

Casting a protective circle around me

Blessing myself during this ritual

with love, light, healing, and peace

Aho

Cast a physical circle with Marigold petals.

Ground

Ground yourself with deep breathes.

Plant your feet firmly on the floor and allow Mother Earth to hold you as she wraps her roots around your ankles. Her love and power flows through her roots and enters the bottom of your feet, up your body and out through the crown of your head.

Ritual - A Circle Feast

Pour a glass of red wine and fill a small plate of food for the spirits.

As you look deeply into the candle, call forth your spiritual council. Close your eyes and visualize a fire in the middle of the forrest. Surrounding the fire is a circle of people gathering and waiting for you. They are your guides who are here to provide you support when you call upon their services. Sit with them, enjoy their company, allow them to transmit knowledge to you.

Open your eyes and eat a piece of dark chocolate. Allowing the chocolate to melt in your mouth as you connect with the taste of Pachamama, Gaia, Mother Earth.

Slowing drink your wine.

Enjoy your food and drink while remember those that have created you.

Celebrate your mother.

Celebrate your father

Celebrate your grandmother.

Celebrate your grandfather.

Celebrate the women that you have seen as a mentor in your life.

Celebrate your grandmother’s mother.

Celebrate the women that have come before you.

You may not know much about them but you can still sit in silence and connect with them.

Close Circle

Say aloud, “I honor those that have come before me. Your lessons, your experiences and your wisdom that has been passed on to me are held with respect. My I release all doubt and step into my power. May the goddesses of death provide me with the power of life as I walk in this work with love, acceptance and joy in accordance to the highest will of the universe. I release the council made up of my spiritual guides and ancestors. I release the four directions and give one last thanks to Father Sky and Mother Earth."
